January is Comfort Foods. First, my favorite, Beef Stroganoff
Every year growing up for my birthday, my Mama would cook me anything I wanted. For many many years I requested Beef Stroganoff. I loved this recipe growing up, but as I got really into cooking, I struggled to find the "down to scratch" recipe. Everyone seemed to use the cream of mushroom soup, so I improvised and made one myself. Brings back lots of birthday memories!
Beef Stroganoff
1 lb ground beef
2 T bacon grease (or butter)
2 T flour
1 onion, diced
3 garlic cloves
1 c broth
1 c mushrooms, if wanted (eeeww! fungus!)
1 c sour cream
2T worchestershire
1 t paprika
1/4 c parsley
salt and pepper
Directions:
1. Saute onion and garlic (and mushrooms if desired) in grease until just soft.
2. Add hamburger, brown
3. Add parsley, paprika, and worchestershire.
4. Add flour, cook for 5 minutes to get raw taste out.
5. Add broth, cook until thickened
6. Add sour cream, cook until warm, serve over rice, egg noodles, mashed potatoes or as a loosemeat sandwhich
